Philadelphia Periodontist Celebrates National Sleep Awareness Week to Promote Sleep Apnea Treatment
PHILADELPHIA, PA – March 7-13, 2010 is National Sleep Awareness Week and one Philadelphia periodontist is using it as an opportunity to educate the public on a non-surgical sleep apnea treatment option offered in his practice.
In preparation for National Sleep Awareness Week, Dr. David DiGiallorenzo, a Philadelphia dental implants specialist, recently added a new page to his Web site devoted to sleep apnea and snoring.
The site explains what sleep apnea is, types of sleep apnea, and treatment options available today. Sleep apnea is a condition where a person quits breathing for seconds at a time during sleep. This often happens up to 10 times an hour in people with obstructive sleep apnea.
“Getting a truly restful sleep each night is necessary for overall health,” said DiGiallorenzo, who owns a Collegeville and Williamsport practice that routinely treats Philadelphia periodontics patients, as well as patients suffering from sleep apnea and disruptive snoring.
Patients who have sleep apnea typically do not get a restful sleep each night, and that can have long-term consequences when left untreated, he said. The challenge with sleep apnea sufferers is that often, they don’t realize they have the condition. It typically is brought to light when a spouse notices that the sleep apnea sufferer quits breathing as they sleep, or snores loudly during sleep.
A snoring and sleep apnea treatment option offered by the Philadelphia periodontists in DiGiallorenzo’s practice is a sort of retainer that is custom made for each individual patient. The device keeps the lower jaw in a protruded position, which helps reduce or stop snoring.
National Sleep Awareness Week is an annual awareness and public education campaign sponsored by the National Sleep Foundation that will be kicked off this year with its first Sleep Health & Safety Conference in National Harbor, Md. on March 5-6. Topics will include diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders, including circadian rhythm disorders, obstructive sleep apnea and insomnia.
