Los Angeles Orthodontist Says Mouth Guards Complete the Athletic Uniform

LOS ANGELES AND SANTA MONICA CALIFORNIA — Los Angeles Orthodontist Dr. Atoosa Nikaeen is promoting the importance of mouth guards for youth involved in sports in conjunction with the American Association of Orthodontists’ efforts.
The AAO’s Moms for Mouth Guards program recently created an online pledge people can take to remember children’s safety when playing sports.

Nikaeen encourages others to visit MomsForMouthGuards.org and sign the pledge. When people do so, the AAO will donate funds to the National Alliance for Youth Sports to assist in purchasing mouth guards for young athletes in need, according to the AAO’s monthly newsletter.

The pledge is free and is designed to raise awareness on how something as simple as a mouth guard can prevent a child from potentially serious injury.

“A mouth guard is a simple, relatively inexpensive piece of equipment that can prevent a potentially costly emergency dental or orthodontic visit,” said Nikaeen, who fits patients for custom mouth guards at her Los Angeles orthodontics practice.

They are particularly important for athletes who wear braces because getting hit in the mouth can cause the insides of the mouth to be cut by the orthodontic appliances, damage teeth, or even break orthodontic appliances, said the Los Angeles invisible braces expert.
Nikaeen likes custom-made mouth guards for her patients because they are designed to fit each individual patient snugly and securely. She also offers different sizes of mouth guards that are designed specifically to be worn over braces. Sometimes it is difficult to get the proper fit with a mouth guard purchased from a sporting goods store, she said.

Making a custom mouth guard typically takes two appointments and begins with taking an impression of the patient’s teeth. The impressions are sent to a dental lab, where the mouth guard is created.

At the second appointment, Nikaeen inspects the mouth guard for proper fit in the patient’s mouth and makes minor adjustments, if needed.
Some patients who wear clear aligners instead of traditional braces may feel that a mouthguard is unnecessary, but that is untrue, said Nikaeen, a Los Angeles Invisalign provider.
