Eagan & Mendota Heights Orthodontist Uses American Idol to Educate on Congenitally Missing Teeth

EAGAN, ST. PAUL AND MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA – Ever since Crystal Bowersox auditioned for American Idol, her teeth- as well as her talent- have generated a great deal of conversation among pop culture bloggers, and Mendota Heights Orthodontist Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth is using it as an opportunity to shed light on the issue of congenitally missing teeth and teeth whitening.

In photos of Bowersox, it appears that she is missing her cuspids, or canine teeth, said Eisenhuth, whose Eagan and Mendota Heights orthodontics practice treats patients with congenitally missing teeth.

About 20 percent of the population has congenitally missing teeth, according to an article on www.dentalresource.org, a dental health Web site. Most of these cases are missing wisdom teeth or third molars. Less than 3 percent of the American population is born with congenitally missing upper lateral incisors, while slightly more than 3 percent lacks second molars.

The best solution for Bowersox and others like her who are missing their cuspids is to have dental implants, said Eisenhuth, a Mendota Heights braces expert.

Implants with porcelain crowns have the look, feel and sturdiness of natural teeth and can last for quite some time when cared for properly, she said, adding that getting dental implants is fairly simple for youth with healthy bone.

An oral surgeon can’t place implants until the patient stops growing, which is at about age 18. At age 24, Bowersox could be a candidate for implants, provided she has no other underlying health issues, said Eisenhuth who also is an Eagan and Mendota Heights Invisalign provider.

Bloggers also chatted up a storm about Bowersox’s dingy-colored teeth at the beginning of the season, but in subsequent episodes, it is apparent she had them whitened and perhaps had a professional teeth cleaning.

“Teeth whitening is one of the easiest, most economical cosmetic dentistry procedures that can be done,” Eisenhuth said. “We educate our patients on good brushing habits and advise them on the benefits of using whitening toothpaste during treatment, and we recommend that they see their family dentist if they are interested in using whitening gels after treatment.”
