Periodontics

Pediodontic dentistry is a field of specialization in dentistry that requires additional education beyond the general practice. Periodontists specialize in soft-tissue health in the mouth, most specifically the health of your gums.

Periodontists can diagnose and treat periodontal disease, commonly called gum disease. This can help prevent complications in pregnancy, bad breath, tooth loss and many other health problems.

Causes of Gum Disease

There are many factors that contribute to gum disease and other periodontal problems, including the following:

- tobacco use

- genetics

- hormonal changes associated with puberty, pregnancy, menstruation, etc.

- stress

- some medications including oral contraceptives, anti-depressants and some heart medicines

- teeth grinding or teeth clenching

- diabetes

- diseases affecting the immune system

- poor nutrition

- poor dental care habits

- eating disorders

Treating periodontal problems

If caught early, most periodontal health issues can be addressed by correcting behaviors or medical conditions that contribute to the problem. Gingivitis, or inflammation of the gums, can be a precursor to periodontal disease and usually is easily treatable. If periodontal disease has developed, your periodontist may recommend gum surgery.

Depending on the problem, these surgeries include a variety of procedures such as soft tissue grafts, crown lengthening, regenerative methods or pocket reductions. If teeth have been lost to periodontal disease, then dental implants may be necessary.
