Los Angeles Orthodontist Employs Mini Dental Implants For Increased Success In Orthodontic Treatment

July 20, 2007 -Los Angeles and Santa Monica, California – Orthodontics has been a steadily evolving science through the years and new methods continue to improve patient results when it comes to properly aligning teeth. One breakthrough that is becoming increasingly popular in orthodontic treatment is the use of mini implants for anchorage, said Dr. Atoosa Nikaeen, a Los Angeles orthodontist. “All patients want good results from their orthodontic treatment,” Nikaeen said. “But not everyone is as eager to do the things they have to do, such wearing head gear or elastics, because the equipment can be bulky and uncomfortable.”

Anchorage control is fundamental to successfully realign teeth during orthodontic treatment, Nikaeen said. Until mini implants, orthodontic tooth movement that once was accomplished through extraoral anchorage- devices such as head gear used outside the mouth- required cooperation from the patient by diligently and properly wearing the anchorage device. Employing the use of mini implants removes the responsibility from the patient and ensures the best possible results in treatment, she said. “We are getting better results since we began using mini implants,” Nikaeen said. “We are using fewer large appliances and the mini implants are replacing head gear and other appliances used inside and outside the mouth.”

Mini implants are increasingly achieving results that eliminate the need for some patients to undergo jaw surgery. One example of this is in correcting severe overbites, Nikaeen said. Other orthodontic issues that have been corrected with the use of mini implants include:

• Retracting and realigning front teeth.
• Closing spaces where molars have had to be removed for successful orthodontic treatment.
• Center-line correction.
• Intruding/extruding teeth.
• Stabilization of teeth with reduced bone support.

The mini implants are not permanent. They simply provide temporary anchorage during orthodontic treatment. The implants are installed by Nikaeen or an oral surgeon and once the patient’s braces are removed, the implants can be removed as well.
