Los Angeles Orthodontist Employs Invisalign Technology to Align Teeth
August 13, 2007 -Los Angeles and Santa Monica, California – Technology continues to advance orthodontic treatment methods, and Invisalign is just one method that provides an alternative to traditional braces. Rather than using the traditional “train track” braces to align teeth, Invisalign uses a series of clear aligners that are custom-molded to fit the patient. Invisalign, also known as “invisible braces,” has gained tremendous popularity as patients become aware of its many assets, said Dr. Atoosa Nikaeen, a Los Angeles orthodontist who has been a certified Invisalign provider since 1999. In addition to the aesthetic reasons for choosing Invisalign, this alignment procedure carries great oral hygiene benefits, Nikaeen said.
Brushing and flossing are made easier because the aligners can be removed. This is especially important for compromised periodontal cases, such as patients who have lost bone and periodontal attachment, Nikaeen said.
“Because of their unobtrusiveness, adults frequently seek out Invisalign instead of traditional braces,” Nikaeen said. Nikaeen’s patients are thrilled with their Invisalign results. “My patients are amazed that these plastic aligners work so effectively,” she said. “They get such great results and they love it.” As Invisalign techniques continue to improve, more extensive orthodontic cases can be treated with this method, Nikaeen said.
HOW IT WORKS
The most important aspect of Invisalign is selecting the right professional for the job, Nikaeen said. Patients should choose a specialist who has extensive experience with Invisalign. After a consultation, Nikaeen establishes a treatment plan for each patient first by discussing the final results. A 3-D computerized model of the patient’s teeth, before and after Invisalign, is created. Invisalign aligners are made from a high quality medical grade plastic and they are virtually invisible when worn.
The series of aligners work to gradually reposition the teeth. At each orthodontist visit, patients are given three sets of aligners, Nikaeen said. They wear each aligner for about two weeks, until their teeth have reached their final alignment. There is some mild discomfort with each change of aligner, but the discomfort is far less than with traditional metal braces. Some patients also experience some small speech problems, Nikaeen said. However, that is short-lived.
“My patients like the notion that they only come in every six weeks and the entire process requires between nine and 18 months,” Nikaeen said.
COST
Invisalign braces cost slightly more than regular and clear braces due to the lab fee, which covers the cost of custom making the aligners. If the patient’s insurance plan covers standard braces, it also will cover Invisalign.
